Our History is Our Strength

Our History is Our Strength, an art exhibit for Women’s History Month, opens on March 3rd in the Hartman Gallery of the Dayton Memorial Library. The exhibit features artwork by alumnae Bonnie Fruland ’06, LaVanda Mireles ’07, and Deanne Gertner ’06, and explores themes of identity, language, narrative, memory, and the past.

Bonnie Fruland’s work deals with disjointed identity in women’s lives as well as viewing the past as an asset both historically and personally. LaVanda Mireles’ work represents portraits of women and their stories, both real and fictitious, and invites the viewer to imbue each piece with associations from her own memory. Deanne Gertner’s piece explores the ways in which language shapes perception in regards to sex and gender and how the evolution of language has made an impact on our views of women.

The opening reception is on Thursday, March 3rd, from 4:30 p.m. – 7:00 p.m., in the Fireplace Lounge. The exhibit will be on display through March 31st.
