Portals to the Infinite

by

The Dayton Memorial Library is hosting an exhibit of the African Art Collection housed in the Regis Archives and Special Collections during December through Jan 26, 2011.

Unlike Western art, images made for traditional tribal life south of the Sahara, were not primarily for decorative display but for practical benefits to the individual, the clan, or the community. Highly abstracted and symbolic, traditional artwork affirmed spiritual, cultural, and political values that helped a community live in harmony. Artwork reminded the living of their communal values, and petitioned the unseen world to offer its welfare to those still in the physical realm.
